Scott Earns Centennial Special Teams Player of the Week

Oct. 16, 2006

LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior place-kicker/punter Ben Scott (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) has been named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in last Saturday's game at Gettysburg. The selection is the third of the season for Scott, who enjoyed one of the finest games of his career in the 23-18 loss to the Bullets.

Scott continued his assault on the Johns Hopkins, Centennial Conference and NCAA Record Books with his effort against Gettysburg. He was 4-for-4 on field goals (he was good from 36, 18, 23 and 21 yards) to set a Johns Hopkins single-game record for most field goals. There had been five previous instances in school history where a player had hit three field goals (including twice by Scott) in a game. His four field goals were also one shy of the Centennial Conference single-game record.

Scott's four field goals improved his school and Centennial Conference career record for most field goals to 39 (the previous record was 33), which moved him into seventh place on the NCAA Division III career list for most successful field goals. His 12-point effort was one point shy of the JHU single-game scoring record for a kicker, while he did pass Todd Bencivenni on JHU's career kick-scoring list with his showing against the Bullets (176). Scott is also now tied for fourth on the Centennial Conference's career kick-scoring list and third on the Johns Hopkins overall scoring list.

For good measure, Scott also demonstrated his proficiency as the Blue Jays' punter as he averaged a school-record 50.7 yards on three punts and pinned the Bullets inside their five-yard line with one of his punts. There was only one other instance in school history where a player averaged better than 50 yards punting in a game (more than one punt) as Jack Thomas averaged 50.0 yards per punt on two attempts in a game during the 1973 season.

Scott, who earned Second Team All-Centennial honors as a place-kicker each of the last two years and First Team All-Centennial as a punter last season, is now 9-of-13 on field goals and is averaging 40.8 yards per punt. He already holds the Johns Hopkins single-season (21) and career records (44) for punts inside the opposition's 20-yard line and he is bidding to become the first Blue Jay to average more than 40 yards per punt in a season since Jim Pitts averaged 40.7 yards in 1970.

Johns Hopkins (2-4 overall, 1-2 in the Centennial Conference) will host Muhlenberg (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday at Homewood Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
