Scott Honored by Centennial Conference

Oct. 3, 2006

LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior place-kicker/punter Ben Scott (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) has been named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in last Saturday's 21-13 loss against Dickinson. The selection marks the second time this season and the fifth time in his career that Scott has been recognized as the Special Teams Player of the Week by the league.

Scott was 2-for-2 on field goals and averaged 38.5 yards on four punts against the Red Devils. He drilled a 48-yard field goal with 1:05 remaining in the second quarter to give the Blue Jays a 10-7 lead and later nailed a 45-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to trim a 14-10 deficit to 14-13. The 48-yard field goal was the second-longest of Scott's career and the third-longest in school history. Earlier this season he hit a school-record 52-yard field goal in a 21-14 win at Randolph-Macon.

Scott's two field goals against Dickinson improve his career total to 35, which moves him into sole possession of first place on the Centennial Conference's career field goal list (he had been tied with Dickinson's Joel Heintzelman (1996-99)). He needs just two more field goals to move into the top 10 in Division III history for most career field goals and five more to become just the seventh player in Division III history to make 40 or more career field goals. With his 48 and 45-yard field goals against Dickinson he now has 10 career field goals of 40 yards or more (the most in school history).

A Second Team All-Centennial pick each of the last two years as a place-kicker and a First Team All-Centennial selection as a punter in 2005, Scott is 5-for-8 on field goals this season and is averaging 40.3 yards per punt. Johns Hopkins has not had a punter average more than 40 yards per punt since 1970. Scott is also the co-holder of the school record for career punts downed inside the opposition's 20-yard line (40) and holds the single-season record for punts downed inside the opposition's 20-yard line (21 in 2005).
