MESA, AZ - Sophomore right hander Patrick Steffee fired seven innings of shutout baseball to lead Johns Hopkins over Luther, 10-0, at Mesa Community College on Saturday morning.
Steffee earned his second win of the season by allowing only three hits through seven while setting down four by way of the strikeout. In four innings, Steffee retired the side in order and allowed only one Norse baserunner to reach second.
Senior southpaw Andrew Bail polished off the shutout with two innings of two-hit relief.
The Blue Jays got on the board in the second inning when sophomore infielder Todd Emr smashed a two-run homer to right field with two outs. Emr's third gopher ball of the season was his only hit of the morning.
Sophomore designated hitter Rob Pietroforte added a 2-for-3 day with three RBI for Hopkins, including a two-RBI single in the third inning.
For the Norse, sophomore right hander Phillip Worden silenced the Blue Jay bats with three-and-two-thirds innings of relief. Worden allowed no earned runs with one strike out. Junior righty Kirby VanDeWalker absorbed the loss.
Johns Hopkins finds its record at 12-3-1 this season, while Luther's ledger sits at 4-2.
