CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Johns Hopkins Women's Tennis Team opened the spring season with a 6-2 loss at Washington College Saturday morning. Freshman Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) earned wins for the Jays.
The Shorewomen opened the match with a sweep at the doubles. Matava and junior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) fell at the #1 spot to Allison Daciek and Beth Foster 8-5. In the #2 spot, Gulnick and senior Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) lost 8-5 to Kristen Hossick and Lydia Bull. Sophomore Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina) and freshman Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) lost 8-4 at #3 to Blake Leeser and Kate Barston.
In singles action, Matava fought back after losing the first set at the #1 spot. Daciek won the first set 7-5, but Matava came back to win the second 6-2 and then the third 6-1 to take the match. Gulnick downed Foster at the #2 spot, winning in two sets 6-2, 6-2. At the #3 spot, Bull defeated Busch 6-3 and 7-5. Hossick beat Blass 6-2, 6-0 at #4 and Leeser beat Seidman 6-1, 6-2 at #5.
