Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore midfielder Paul Rabil and freshman attackman Tom Duerr both scored three goals and added one assist and the seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team had 11 different players score in a 19-6 win over visiting Mount St. Mary's at rain-soaked Homewood Field Monday night. The win is the second straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 5-3 with the victory, while the Mountaineers dropped their second straight and fall to 1-7. The Blue Jays have also won 24 straight games in the month of April and are 50-1 in their last 51 games in April since the start of the 1997 season.
The Blue Jays wasted little time jumping on the Mountaineers as six different players scored in a 7-0 run that covered the first 20 minutes of the game. Rabil opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 40 seconds into the game and added his second goal of the game to open the second quarter to make it 6-0. Also scoring during the opening spree for the Blue Jays were junior Jake Byrne, sophomore Kevin Huntley and freshmen Brian Christopher, Mark Bryan and Tom Duerr. Duerr's goal was the first of his career and came on a nifty spin around a defender after taking a pass goal-line extended, while Huntley's goal came off an assist from Byrne with the Blue Jays playing man-up.
The Mountaineers drew within 7-2 before a lightning delay halted the game for two hours and 22 minutes. Ben Mundorf and Matt Warner both scored in a span of 40 seconds midway through the second quarter to slice the lead to five, but Hopkins returned from the delay and promptly scored six goals in a span of less than six minutes to push the lead to 13-2 and effectively put the game away. Duerr scored two of his three goals in the six-goal run, which was jump-started by a Greg Peyser goal just 19 seconds after play resumed and polished off by a Drew Dabrowski goal 70 seconds into the third quarter.
The Blue Jays' largest lead (19-3) came early in the fourth quarter after another 6-0 run. Sophomore Michael Doneger scored both of his goals during this run, which was answered by a three-goal flurry for the Mountaineers in the final nine minutes that accounted for the final score. Adam Sharretts, Jason Werner and Jeremy Weitz all tallied in the final 8:36 of the game for Mount St. Mary's with the goals by Sharretts and Weitz coming with the extra man.
In addition to Rabil and Duerr's efforts, the Blue Jays got two goals and three assists from Byrne and two goals and two assists from Dabrowksi. Peyser had one goal and one assist, won 10-of-11 faceoffs and grabbed a season-high 11 ground balls.
Sharretts scored twice to lead the Mountaineers, who also got one goal and one assist from Mundorf and Werner. The Blue Jays outshot the Mountaineers 46-20, held a 44-26 advantage in ground balls and won 19-of-28 faceoffs.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on April 15 when the Blue Jays host Maryland. Mount St. Mary's opens play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Saturday, April 8 when the Mountaineers travel to Marist.
