ALLENTOWN, PA - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team (6-4, 2-0) won its fifth straight game Friday night, thanks to sophomore Emily Miller's (Garden City, NY/Garden City) overtime goal. The Blue Jays defeated the Muhlenberg Mules (6-4, 1-2) 5-4 in overtime to improve to 2-0 in Centennial Conference play. It was the first overtime game for Hopkins since September 1, 2005, a 4-3 win at Mary Washington.
"I'm really proud of this team and how they're maturing," said head coach Megan Callahan. "They're able to make great adjustments in games, changing to their opponent's style of play. I'm excited about the challenges to come."
Sophomore Katie Wong (Los Angeles, Ca/Harvard-Westlake) opened the scoring at 10:27, when she buried a rebound of a shot by senior Amy Soergel (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), who had a solid game in the midfield. Just 64 seconds later, Muhlenberg tied the game when Jillian Duffy tipped in a long shot by Tara Cohn. The Mules then took the lead at 21:29. Jessica Hand scored off a tipped pass by LisaAnn Polt.
Hopkins came out flying in the second half, tying the game just 3:17 in off Miller's first of the night. Sophomore Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) gave the Blue Jays back the lead at 48:55. Off a penalty corner, Mules goalie Lauren Schram came out to challenge and Landy's shot sailed past her. Muhlenberg tied the game again at 57:05 to make it 3-3. Polt finished a rebound of a Cohn shot.
The Mules took the lead at 4-3 just over two minutes later when Duffy scored her second of the night, this time from Kate Moyer. Miller tied the game for Hopkins just 39 seconds later off an assist from freshman Brittany Bland (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy). Neither team could find the net again before the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. Just 2:23 in, Miller completed her hat trick and gave Hopkins its fifth consecutive win.
Senior goalie Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) made six saves in goal for the Blue Jays. Schram finished with two saves for the Mules. Muhlenberg held the edge in shots 13-12 and penalty corners 12-8.Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, October 3 at Swarthmore. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
