Hopkins Beats George Washington, 16-13

WASHINGTON, DC - The Johns Hopkins water polo team closed out the regular season with a thrilling 16-13 win at George Washington on Tuesday night. With the win, the Blue Jays even their record at 12-12 heading into the Division III Eastern Championships.

Hopkins led 4-3 late in the first quarter, but George Washington scored four of the next five to take a 7-5 lead after the first quarter. The Colonials added to their lead in the second quarter outscoring the Blue Jays 3-1 and took a 10-6 lead into the half.

George Washington continued its run in the third quarter, pushing out to a 12-7 lead with 4:22 left in the quarter. Hopkins then rattled off nine unanswered goals and held GW scoreless for 11:30 as the Blue Jays stormed back to take a 16-12 lead. Fueling the run for the Blue Jays were seniors Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle), Chris Hemmerle (Harleysville, PA/ Souderton) and Joey Jankiewicz (Coronado, CA/Coronado) with two goals apiece. Nick Eddy scored with 52 seconds to play for the Colonials to cut the lead to three but that would be the last of the scoring.

Hopkins returns to action this weekend as the Blue Jays look to defend their DIII Eastern Championship. MIT will serve as the host this year with the first games taking place on Saturday.
