COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The #7 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays lost its first Centennial Conference match of the season Saturday, falling 5-1 to the #6 Ursinus Bears. The Blue Jays fall to 12-4 overall and 8-1 in the conference, while the Bears improve to 15-2 overall and 9-1 in the conference. With the win, Ursinus clinches the #1 seed and home field advantage for next weekend's Centennial Conference Championships.
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead when Jessica Zatwarnicki banged home a pass from Jennie Moore just 3:56 into the game. Play went back and forth over the next six minutes as the Blue Jays attempted to pull even. However, Ursinus extended its lead to two when Kait Sutherland converted a penalty stroke at 10:07. The Bears made it a three-goal lead with just 2:06 to play in the first half after Moore scored on a high shot to left side of the cage.
Hopkins finally got on the board, pulling within two at 3-1at 50:50. Sophomore Andrea Vandersall (Hampton, NH/ Winnacunnet) scored off an assist from junior Emily Miller (Garden City, NY/Garden City). Ursinus quickly retook a three-goal lead after Zatwarnicki found the cage for the second time, just 25 seconds after Vandersall's goal. The Bears tacked on another goal with less than seven minutes to play as Moore scored her second of the day.
Sophomore goalie Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) finished with six saves in the loss, while Bears' goalie Jessica Lamina made two in the win. Ursinus had the edge in shots (19-5) and corners (16-2).
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Bryn Mawr Owls visit historic Homewood Field. The Blue Jays will honor their five seniors and one graduate student prior to the game. The Centennial Conference game is set for 1:00 pm.
