LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's swim team competed against its first Division III opponent of the season and earned a 175-89 win over host Franklin & Marshall. Senior Erica Pakkala (Lititz, PA/Warwick) and freshman Elizabeth Dowdle (Tampa, FL/Academy of the Holy Names) lead the way with two individual wins apiece.
Hopkins opened the meet with by claiming second through fifth in the 200 Medley Relay. The "A" team claimed second place, with Pakkala, sophomore Caitlin Dennis (Moorsetown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy), freshman Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) and Dowdle combining for a time of 1:54.03. Junior Kate Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) followed that with a first place finish in the 400 IM (4:39.98). Freshman Mary Claire Kozlowski (Fairfax, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) finished in second with a time of 4:46.60.
Junior Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) then took first in the 200 Free, finishing in 2:01.15. Freshman Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) followed in third with a time of 2:03.67. It was another win for Hopkins in the 50 Back as the Blue Jays swept the top three spots. Pakkala took first with a time of 28.59, followed by sophomore Lisa Qu (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) in 29.44 and freshman Jill Barclay (Andover, MA/North Andover) in third (29.61).
In the 50 Breast, the Blue Jays took second through fourth, with Dennis coming in second with a time of 33.03. Freshman Charlotte Floria (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) took third (33.67) and sophomore Kayla Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) took fourth (35.29). In the 100 Fly, M. Heslin finished in second with a time of 1:02.29. In both the 50 Free and the 100 Free, Dowdle took first while junior Val Neff-Rasmussen (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) finished in second.
Pakkala then won the 100 Back with a time of 1:00.49 while Dennis took first in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:10.86. K. Heslin followed that with a win in the 500 Free with a time of 5:20.21. Zepp claimed second in the 500 Free with a time of 5:24.29. Freshman Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) took second in the 50 Fly (28.64), while Kozlowski took third (28.80) and M. Heslon took fourth (29.36). Qu then won the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.98. Dennis followed in second in 2:18.05. Hopkins closed out the meet with a win in the 200 Free Relay. Pakkala, Zepp, Qu and Hansen combined for a total time of 1:44.05.
Hopkins returns to action at the Thomas Murphy Invitational at Loyola College, November 9-10. In addition to Johns Hopkins and Loyola, VMI and Howard are also competing at the invitational.
