GRANTHAM, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team suffered a 85-40 defeat at the hands of #11 Messiah College on Tuesday night in Grantham, PA. The Blue Jays (1-2) got nine points from sophomore Monica Mitchell in the contest.
Messiah opened the game on an 11-2 run and shot 64.5 percent in the first half. The Blue Jays shot 36.4 percent in the first half and trailed 53-17 at halftime.
Hopkins hit its first shot coming out of the break as junior Kristin Phillips nailed a three-pointer but Messiah answered with a pair of buckets from Lauren Schurr and Ashley Brooks.Messiah shot 42.9 percent in the second half to Hopkins 30.4 percent and claimed the 85-40 victory.
Hopkins got nine points from Mitchell and senior Andrea Dodrill. Phillips pulled down a team-high six rebounds while Dodrill had five boards.
Messiah placed six players in double figures led by Schurr's 19 tallies on the night. Silalie Shani contributed 14 points and posted eight rebounds. Julie Henninger tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight.
Hopkins is back in action on Tuesday, November 27 when the Blue Jays open their Centennial Conference schedule. Hopkins travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 7 p.m. game in Lancaster.
