PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team had a very strong showing in the first event of the season, the Temple Open. Junior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) led the way with a second place finish in the Foil. Freshman Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) finished in a tie for third in the Sabre and sophomore Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) placed 12th in the Epee.
Freshman Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) finished just behind Oppenheim, in 13th place in the Epee. Freshman Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) finished in a tie for 17th, while junior Dane Schiro (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) took 24th and sophomore Chris Mihalsky (Edmond, OK/Edmond North) finished in 29th.
In the Foil, Ferguson was followed closely by junior Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) who finished in a tie for third. Sophomore Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) finished in 13th and junior Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) took 17th. Sophomore Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School) finished in 39th with freshman Justin Bradfield (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) finishing in 80th.
In the Sabre, senior Jake Sand (Laverock, PA/Germantown Friends) finished in 35th, followed by junior David Hill (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) in 37th. Freshman Michael Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) finished in 54th while sophomore Chris Mayhew (Eagle, ID/Eagle) finished in 73rd.
Hopkins will take this weekend off as the team prepares for the Penn State Open on Sunday, November 18.
