BALTIMORE, MD -- The Johns Hopkins University football team, which will close the regular season at McDaniel on Saturday afternoon, has placed three players on the 2007 ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Football Team. The three selections give the Johns Hopkins football program 26 District II Academic All-District selections in the last five years and 52 selections since 1991.
All three Johns Hopkins players selected are making their first appearance on the team. Senior wide receiver Corey Sattler (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) earned first team honors, while senior defensive lineman Scott Meyers (Powell, OH/Olentangy) and sophomore running back Andrew Kase (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) were named to the second team. As a first team selection, Sattler will now go on the ballot for national Academic All-America honors. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team is due to be announced on November 29.
Sattler currently leads the team in receiving with 38 receptions for 510 yards and one touchdown despite missing the first two games of the season. He enters the final game of the season tied for ninth in school history in receptions (91) and ranked 10th in receiving yards (1,282). His career average of 14.1 yards per reception also ranks among the top 10 in school history among players with 1,000 or more receiving yards. In addition to his on-field exploits, Sattler counts numerous extra-curricular activities to his credit. He completed an internship at Sheppard Pratt Mental Health System where he assisted with group therapy sessions. He has also served as a lab assistant at Hopkins, volunteers weekly with the Book Thing of Baltimore (distributes free books to the community) and volunteers as a tutor/mentor at the Penn Lucy Youth Program Learning Center. Sattler is the sixth Johns Hopkins wide receiver to earn Academic All-District honors since 1991.
Meyers has played in seven games with six starts to his credit this season at nose guard. He counts 17 tackles, three tackles for losses, one sack, and one blocked kick to his credit. Meyers is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and completed an internship at JP Morgan. He has also twice been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll. Meyers is the 11th Johns Hopkins defensive lineman to earn Academic All-District honors since 1991.
Kase has emerged as one of the top young running backs in the Centennial Conference as he currently leads the team in rushing (782), rushing yards per game (97.8), all-purpose yards (991) and all-purpose yards per game (123.9). He counts five 100-yard rushing games to his credit (one shy of the JHUs single-season record) and ranks fourth on the team in receiving (21-209-4). He has the longest rush (57) and reception (59) on the team this season and recently became the 21st player in school history to top the 1,000 career rushing yards mark. His 1,092 yards rank 19th in school history and his seven career 100-yard games is already tied for eighth-best in school history. Kase is the seventh JHU running back to earn Academic All-District honors since 1991.
The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Athletes named to the first team qualify for the national ballot, with the national team due to be announced on November 29. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
