LANCASTER, PA - The No.15 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team won its fifth straight match Saturday, shutting out Franklin & Marshall 9-0 in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Diplomats fall to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Hopkins opened the match with three solid wins at doubles, taking a 3-0 lead into singles play. At first doubles, freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) and sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) won their fifth straight match. They defeated Katie Gaskins and Barbara Bee 8-5. Freshman Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) and senior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) also won 8-5, beating Jenna Ishkanian and Christina Henkel at second doubles. And at third, junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) won 8-3 over Danielle Barish and Dana Russo.
In singles action, the Blue Jays won all six matches in straight sets. No.16 Bhamidipati defeated Bee at second singles for her fifth straight win. At third, No.21 Schubert also kept her win streak alive, defeating Erica Wood, for her fourth consecutive win. No.11 Matava won at first singles, beating Gaskins and ending a two-match losing streak. Gulnik defeated Barish at fourth, also ending a two-match losing streak. Busch won over Russo at fifth singles without losing a game. No.48 Berlinghof won her third straight, beating Ishkanian at sixth.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 against Dickinson. The Red Devils are the only other unbeaten team in the Centennial. The conference match is set begin at 4:00 pm in Baltimore.
