BALTIMORE, MD - Senior attacker Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) broke the Hopkins all-time career points record and nine different Blue Jays scored in an 18-5 win over visiting Mount St. Mary's. The #11 Blue Jays improve to 3-1 on the season while the Mountaineers fall to 0-2. Key notched eight points in the game breaking Jenn Ward's record of 290.
Hopkins opened the game on a 6-0 run when Key scored just one minute in off an assist from junior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century). Schwarzmann then tallied her fourth of the season, followed by back-to-back strikes from fifth-year senior Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber). Freshman Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn School) found the twine for her second of the season off a fast break after a Mountaineer turnover. Key and Schwarzmann connected again just 10 seconds later after winning the draw.
Katelyn Catanese then scored her first of the season for Mount St. Mary's putting an end to the Hopkins run. The Blue Jays then rattled off five straight as they pushed out to a 10-goal lead. The Mount's A.J. Johnson scored with just 1:44 on the clock to make it an 11-2 game at the half.
Hopkins came out firing in the second, getting three quick goals from senior Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), Key and sophomore Jenny Higgins (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin). Trailing 14-2, Mount St. Mary's responded with a three-goal run, as Rebecca Douglass, Catanese and Katie Falatach all scored. The Blue Jays ended the game with four unanswered from senior Alex Nolan (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park), Key and freshman Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's).
Sophomore Amelia Harris (Clifton, VA/J.W. Robinson) made just one save while playing 37:12. Freshman Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) played the remaining 22:41 in goal and made one save. Key, Bathras, Schwarzmann, Walsh, Schrum, Janice, Nolan and junior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) all had multi-point games for the Blue Jays. Mountaineer's goalie Jane Karger finished with 12 saves in the loss.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 11 as the Blue Jays travel to Columbus to face Ohio State. Sunday's game is the American Lacrosse Conference opener for the Blue Jays. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
