FREDERICKSBURG, VA - No.10 Mary Washington defeated No.15 Johns Hopkins 6-3 Wednesday, snapping the Blue Jays nine-match win streak. The Blue Jays, playing their sixth match in seven days, fall to 11-3 on the season while the Eagles improve to 13-2.
Hopkins earned a win at third doubles and entered the singles competition trailing 2-1. Junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) defeated No.36 Priscilla Jamison and Amy Sheetz 9-7 at third. It was the pair's fifth consecutive win and team-best 13th of the season.
The Blue Jays picked up wins at first and second singles, but the Eagles won at third through sixth to take the match. No.11 Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) won her 15th match of the season and sixth straight, defeating No.18 Stephanie Kurti in straight sets at first. No.16 Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) stretched her win streak to 10 with a straight sets win at second over No.30 Katie Miglin.
At third singles, No.26 Becky Morse-Karzen won in three over No.21 Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin). Gulnik won her first set at fourth, but eventually fell in three sets to No.32 Natalie Fugate. Senior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) and No.48 Berlinghof also fell in three sets at fifth and sixth singles respectively.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 14 against Bryn Mawr. The Centennial Conference match is set to begin at 11:00 am in Baltimore.
