BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team picked up its first win of the season, beating Franklin & Marshall 141-115 in its first dual meet against a Division III team of the season. The Blue Jays won 10 of 11 events in the meet before swimming exhibitions.
The Blue Jays opened up with a one-two finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of junior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose), freshman Nicolas Gimenez (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale), senior Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and freshman Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) finished in 1:37.73. The team of senior John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb), sophomore Chris Razavi (Fairport, NY/Fairport), sophomore John Coia (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) and junior Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) finished in 1:39.98.
Hopkins then swept the top three spots in the 400 IM with senior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) taking the win in 4:11.72. Freshman Markus Kowalsky (St. Louis Park, MN/International School of Minnesota) followed in second (4:20.68) and freshman Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham International School) took third (4:20.96). Sophomore Alex Hsieh (Beijing, China/International School of Beijing) won the 200 Free in 1:48.54. Freshman Matt Watson (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Prep) took third in 1:49.92.
Freshmen Dan Raynard (Glenview, IL/Loyola Academy) and Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) combined to go one-two in the 50 Back. Raynard won in 26.45 followed by Niemiec in 26.64. Gimenez then won the 50 Breast in 28.56. Freshman Alex Kim (Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) and junior Chris Whelan (Haddonfield, NJ/Delbarton School) finished first and second, respectively in the 100 Fly.
Zandee continued the string of JHU wins, taking first in the 50 Free (21.78), followed by Bulakul in second (22.33). Thomas followed with a win in the 100 Free in 48.74. Niemiec and freshman Preston Youngdahl (Wayzata, MN/Minnetonka) went one-two in the 100 Back, finishing in 55.97 and 56.10 respectively. Tom Grabiak ended Hopkins run of first place finishes, taking first in 1:03.71, just .06 ahead of Razavi.
Freshman Jonathan Gordon (Potomac, MD/Richard Montgomery) and Erik von Heijne (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) went one-two in the 500 Free in 5:01.77 and 5:09.17, respectively. Hopkins swam exhibitions for the rest of the meet.
Hopkins returns to action Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Thomas Murphy Invitational hosted by Loyola College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm on Friday and 10:00 am on Saturday.
