Fishel Places Eighth at NCAA National Wrestling Championship

March 8, 2008

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Johns Hopkins senior Eric Fishel finished eighth at 184-pounds at the NCAA National Wrestling Championship. Fishel wraps up his Blue Jay career by earning All-American honors.

Fishel started his action on Saturday by facing Robert Gotreau from Augsburg. Gotreau had entered the tournament as the number seven seed and had faced Fishel earlier this season at the NWCA National Duals. Gotreau won the match by a 9-0 major decision. Battling for seventh place, Fishel took on Elliot Smith of Springfield College. Smith defeated Fishel on a pin in 5:19 to end the season for the Blue Jay senior.

Fishel ends his career with what is believed to be the school record in wins with 98. He also has two Centennial Conference titles to his credit and two appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Head coach Keith Norris loses Fishel and Jim Crumlish to graduation but welcomes back a core group of wrestlers next season. That group will be led by Centennial Conference champion and NCAA tournament participant Patrick Stanley.
