WESTMINSTER, MD - The #21 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team blanked rival McDaniel 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Westminster to remain unbeaten in Centennial Conference play at 9-0. The Blue Jays are now 12-1 overall and are just one win shy of their second straight unbeaten Centennial Conference slate. The Green Terror fall to 0-9 overall and in the conference.
Hopkins swept through the three doubles matches without losing a game to take an early 3-0 lead on McDaniel. Juniors Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) won at first over Becky Parks and Jamie Latham. At second, sophomore Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) and freshman Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) beat Ali Johns and Rachel Baumgarden. And at third, sophomore Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and freshman Alli Lee (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School) defeated Nataly Hartman and Kristina Shavirov.
In singles action, the Blue Jays swept all six matches in straight sets while losing just three games. At first, Matava won over Johns. That win was her 93rd career (singles and doubles), breaking Tanya Gulnik's record of 92 career wins. Dwyer picked up her 14th win of the season at second with a win over Parks. At third, Schubert won her fourth straight in beating Latham 6-0, 6-1. Berlinghof improved to 13-4 on the season with a win over Harthman at fourth. Blass won at fifth over Caitlin Daniels. While at sixth, Lee beat Shahirov 6-2, 6-0 for her first career Centennial win.
Hopkins wraps up its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, April 19 when Ursinus visits Baltimore. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am and will be followed by the men's match with Dickinson at 2:00 pm.
