COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Johns Hopkins dropped its regular-season finale, 8-3, at third-ranked Ursinus Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays drop to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in the Centennial Conference, while the Bears improve to 16-2 (10-0).
The Bears needed just over six minutes to get on the board, as Jessica Zatwarnicki scored on a blast from the right side. Hopkins answered less than two minutes later however, scoring off a penalty corner. Senior Brittany Bland (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy) struck the corner for the Blue Jays. Junior Jenn Motylinski (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) stopped the ball for junior Ariana Branchini (Old Lyme, CT/Choate), who fired it home for her fifth of the season.
Ursinus would score three goals in a span of 11:14 at the end of the half to take a 4-1 lead at the half. Alyssa Thren scored off a corner at 23:46 to give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish. Just four seconds after Thren's goal, Michelle Wimmer scored off another Ursinus corner, to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. Jen Hooven would tack on one just 2:40 before the end of the half.
Coming out of the half, Megan Yoder scored the first of her two on the day to push the lead to four. Hopkins cut the deficit back to three with a goal from sophomore Carly Bianco (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) at 47:19. Ursinus got goals from Yoder, Zatwarnicki and Thren over the final 20 minutes. While Bland would add a goal to go with her earlier assist to account for the 8-3 final.
Senior Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) played 50:50 in goal for the Blue Jays and finished with a season-high 13 saves. Tieu's 13 saves give her 267 for her career and moving her into seventh in school history. Sophomore Kim Stein (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) came on in relief and made a career-high nine saves. Erica Scott got the start for the Bears and made one save in 50:20 of action. LauraLee Lightwood-Mater came on in relief and made two saves.
Hopkins, which earned a first-round bye in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament, will play Gettysburg in the semifinals next Saturday at Ursinus. Details of the tournament will be released on Monday, stay tuned to HopkinsSports.com.
