PHOENIX, AZ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team fell to Western New England, 11-10, on Wednesday in the RussMatt Invitational. Up 5-3, the Blue Jays gave up four runs in the fifth inning. JHU scored two in the ninth but it wasn't enough to upset WNEC as the Blue Jays move to 5-5 on the season.
James Teta scored the first fun of the game after Brian Youchak doubles to center to send Teta home in the first.
The Blue Jays continued with three runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Chris Huisman reached on an error to open the inning and Dave Garber homered to bring in two runs. Lee Bolyard would also come around to score after hitting a double.
Todd Emr singled to left field and later advanced to third after a failed pickoff attempt. Emr scored on Huisman's sacrifice fly to give Hopkins a 5-3 lead heading into the fourth.
WNEC scored four runs in the fifth inning, rallying on two outs. WNEC collected three hits in the inning to take the 7-5 lead.
Hopkins scored another in the sixth after Bolyard's sacrifice fly allowed Huisman to cross the plate.
WNEC answered with another two runs in the sixth inning to earn the 9-6 advantage.
Youchak walked in the seventh before Brendan Walsh hit a homerun to give the Blue Jays two more runs and bring them within one, 9-8.
WNEC scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings to make it 11-8 and earn the win.
The Blue Jays entered the ninth needing three runs to tie the score. JHU came up with two after Walsh and Emr scored, falling short.
Hopkins will face Southern Maine on Thursday in the RussMatt Invitational in Phoenix, AZ.
