BALTIMORE, MD - The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up two Centennial Conference wins on Saturday to clinch a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. Hopkins won at Swarthmore 7-2 in the morning before traveling the 14 miles to Bryn Mawr where the Blue Jays won 9-0. JHU improves to 9-3 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial with its eighth straight win.
Against the Garnet, the Blue Jays won two of three doubles matches and then five of six singles matches to earn the win. Junior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) and sophomore Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) won 8-5 at second over Alexis Hickman and Kathryn Stockbower. While at third, junior Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and sophomore Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) won 8-3 over Marissa Lee and Luann Cignavitch. Swarthmore picked up its first point of the match with an 8-4 win at first doubles. Jennie Park and Rachel Wallwork defeated senior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and freshman Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview).
In singles action, Wallwork beat Warren, 6-3, 6-3 at first for the Garnet's second point. Bhamidipati won her sixth straight match, beating Park, 6-4, 6-1 at second. Freshman Mallory Willenborg (Miami Shores, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) dropped just one game at third against Cignavitch, as she improved to 15-5 on the season. Matava blanked Hickman at fourth for her eighth straight and 65th overall win of her career. Dwyer lost just one game in her win at fifth over Stockbower. While Elamir won at sixth, blanking Jennifer Trinh, for her fifth straight win.
Against the Owls, the Blue Jays lost a total of just 14 games in the 9-0 win. In doubles play, Matava and Warren won 8-1 over Karen Ginsburg and Anna Perocchi. At second, Bhamidipati and Elamir won 8-0. While Berlinghof and Dwyer also won 8-0, beating Leah Raj and Mimi Nguyen at third.
At first singles, Matava dropped just two sets in winning 6-1, 6-1 at first over Ginsburg. At second, Elamir also dropped just two games in beating Perocchi while Berlinghof blanked Nguyen at third. At fourth, freshman Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Doylestown) lost just one game in beating Roney to improve to 7-1 in her career. At fifth, junior Dory Giannos (Darien, CT/Darien) also lost just one game over Raj. And at sixth, sophomore Alli Lee (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough) won 6-3, 6-4 over Mel Shafer.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 22 at Gettysburg. The Centennial Conference match is slated to start at 4:00 pm. Hopkins will then close out the regular season on Saturday, April 25 against Haverford at home.
