Blue Jays Impressive at McElligott Invitational

HAVERFORD, PA -- The Johns Hopkins women's indoor track team made a solid showing at Haverford's McElligott Invitational on Saturday with impressive individual and relay performances. There was no team scoring at the invitational, which primarily included schools from the Mid.-Atlantic region.

Among the highlights for the Blue Jays:

• A first-place finish in the 4x200 meter relay. The team of Amelia Vallenilla, Leah Sibener, Tara Berglund, and Paula Osborn edged the host Fords for first with a time of 1:49.18, a mark that missed the school record by less than one second.

• Freshman Alana Merkow broke the women's freshman shot put record with a throw of 12.24 meters. She hit the mark on your last throw to beat Jackie Freund of Haverford. Merkow was also named the athlete of the meet by the Johns Hopkins coaching staff.

• The 4x400 meter relay team of Amelia Vallenilla, Stephanie Chung, Leah Sibener, and Anita Mikkilineni placed second to a strong TCNJ team and held off Haverford for second place with their best time of the year (4:15.87).

• Three top-10 finishers in the one-mile run as Liz Provost (3rd • 5:15.85), Mary O'Grady (5th • 5:19.77) and Annie Monagle (9th • 5:27.84) led the way in a 43-person field.

• A first-place finish in the 200-meter dash by Osborn (27.13), who added a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash (7.59). She also placed sixth in the long jump (15'-7").

Emily Kashka won the pole vault with a jump of 9'-5" and was joined in the top four in the event by teammates Cherry Yeung and (3rd • 8'-11.75") and Tracey Vill (4th • 8'-6").

Stephanie Chung (1:02.75) and Jackie Ferguson (1:04.76) placed fourth and seventh, respectively in the 400-meter dash.

• Marie Ferguson (4th • 2:25.64), Elizabeth Lester (6th • 2:30.85) and Sam Stuek (9th • 2:33.42) all placed in the top 10 in the 800-meter run.

• Kristen Spera placed second in the high jump (4'-7.75").
