BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to visiting Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays outshot the Diplomats 22-3 but were unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit and fall to 10-3-3 (3-2-2 CC) on the year. F&M improves to 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-3 in conference play.
Hopkins kept the ball in the F&M half of the field for much of the first half and outshot the visitors 10-1 in the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to capitalize. JHU's best opportunity in the first stanza came in the 33rd minute. Junior Sean Coleman dribbled towards goal into the right side of the 18-yard box and found himself one-on-one with F&M senior goalkeeper Zack Zamek. Coleman ripped a shot towards the near post that narrowly missed wide and the score remained 0-0.
The Diplomats got on the board first just out of the halftime break, when freshman Ben Beaver collected the ball about 10 yards from goal on the left side of the box in the 49th minute. After a JHU mis-clearance, Beaver quickly blasted a shot to the near post that found the back of the net to give F&M a 1-0 advantage.
F&M extended its lead to 2-0 just over ten minutes later, when junior Eric Elicker curved a free kick from just outside the left side of box to the far post past the outstretched hands of Blue Jay senior goalkeeper Ravi Gill.
The Blue Jays attack continued to pressure the F&M defense and were finally able to break through in the 84th minute when senior Kevin Hueber redirected a cross with his head to senior Scott Bukoski, who headed home his third goal of the season to pull Hopkins within one goal of the visitors.
Hopkins recorded three shots the rest of the way but were unable to tally the equalizer. Gill totaled one save in the loss, while Zamek recorded nine saves for the Diplomats.
The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, October 27 at conference foe Gettysburg at 7 pm.
