GREENCASTLE, IN - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team dropped both of its matches on Saturday to finish eighth at the second annual ITA Division III National Indoor Championship. Hopkins lost to host and 11th-ranked Depauw, 8-1, in the morning before falling to sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 7-2, in the nightcap.
Hopkins faced host DePauw in the consolation semifinals Saturday morning. The Tigers took control early, sweeping all three doubles matches. Greer Mackie and Kayla Smith won at first, beating freshman Nandita Krishnan and sophomore Carolyn Warren, 8-3. Kelly Gebert and Janelle Arita then made it a 2-0 match with an 8-4 win over junior Yasmine Elamir and freshman Candace Wu. Taylor Prodromos and Tricia Wilks wrapped up doubles play with an 8-3 win over freshman Ariel Several and senior Ellen Berlinghof.
In singles action, Krishnan picked up a point for Hopkins with a 6-0, 7-5 win at third over Mackie. Arita then pushed the lead back to three with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Warren at first. Gebert followed with a three-set win over senior Anita Bhamidipati at second, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Smith clinched the match for DePauw by beating Several, 6-2, 6-4 at fourth. Wilks made it a 7-1 match after her 6-4, 6-1 win at fifth over freshman Andrea Berlinghof. And Courtney Griffin wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Elamir.
Hopkins then faced off against Carnegie Mellon in the seventh-place match. The Tartans also swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Jennifer Chui and Alexandra Tapak picked up an 8-3 win over Berlinghof and freshman Renata Smith at third. Ashley Herrick and Kelly Hart then won 8-6 at second over Elamir and Wu. Courtney Chin and Laura Chen closed out doubles with an 8-6 win at first over Warren and Krishnan.
In singles, Cze-Ja Tam pushed the lead to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at fourth over Several. Chin then beat Bhamidipati by an identical score at second to clinch the match for the Tartans. Chen also won by a 6-2, 6-2 score over Warren at first. Elamir picked up Hopkins first point of the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth over Chui. Wu followed with a win at sixth over Alisa Liebowitz, dropping just one game, 6-0, 6-1. Hart rallied for a three-set win at fifth over Andrea Berlinghof to close out the match, winning 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10).
Hopkins returns to action on March 16 at Division II Flagler in St. Augstine, FL. The match is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
