Chandler, AZ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team was defeated, 13-8, by Simpson College at the Snedigar Field Complex in Chandler, AZ. The Blue Jays made a push in the seventh inning by plating five runs but it was not enough to overtake The Storm. With the win, Simpson improves to 4-3 while Hopkins falls to 7-2.
Simpson jumped on top, 1-0, in the top of the first. Junior Dave Johnson hit a triple to right-centerfield and scored on a single by senior Scott Ethell.
In the second, Hopkins tied the score at one apiece when senior James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem) hit an RBI single to score senior Brendan Walsh (La Jolla, CA/The Bishop's School), who reached base on a fielder's choice.
The game did not stay tied long as The Storm opened the third inning with four consecutive singles. Ethell hit in senior Corey Rasmussen. Junior Brad Agan then singled to score junior Dave Johnson and Ethell. Agan would later score on a Blue Jay error.
Hopkins added two runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-3 in favor of Simpson. Junior Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) hit an RBI double to right center to score senior Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spaulding). Sikorski would then score on a single by senior John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga).
Simpson added two runs in the top of the fourth. Rasmussen hit a double with one out and scored on a double to left field by Johnson. Johnson then scored on a single to center by Ethell, which knocked Blue Jay starter, sophomore Lucas Henneman (Atlanta, GA/Chamblee) out of the game. Sophomore Ryan Scherich (Torrance, CA/Canyon) came in and induced a 4-6-3 double to get out of the inning.
Scherich pitched 1.2 shutout innings and struck out two batters.
The Storm increased their lead to 11-3 by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Agan and sophomore Colton Calvert each had RBI singles but junior Justin Svehla did the most damage with a two-RBI triple down the right field line.
In the seventh Ethell hit a two-run home run to left field to give The Storm a 13-3 lead.
The Blue Jays took advantage of a Simpson error to score five unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) hit a two-RBI double over the left fielders head and later scored on a single by Sikorski. Sikorski scored on a double to the left-centerfield gap by Swarr. Sophomore Aaron Borentstein (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro) followed with a double of his own to score Swarr, but Walsh was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score from first base.
Senior Clint Rhodes of Simpson, who game in with two outs in the seventh, held the Blue Jays scoreless for the final two innings. Rhodes pitched 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit.
Sophomore Chris Dorff was the winning pitcher. Dorff pitched 6.2 innings and allowed only two earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts. Dorff allowed six runs total.
Henneman received the loss for Hopkins, going 3.1 innings and allowing six earned runs on ten hits.
For Simpson, Johnson went 5-for-5 on the day with a double and a triple and five runs scored. Ethell went 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored. Rasmussen had three hits and three runs scored and Svehla had two hits and two RBIs.
Sikorski had two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored for Hopkins. Swarr also had two hits and two RBIs and grad student Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) had two hits.
Simpson out-hit Hopkins 16-to-10 and both teams made three errors in the game.
The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow when they play Western New England at 10:00 am MT.
