#18 Johns Hopkins Upends #13 Mary Washington, 8-1

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team snapped its four-match losing streak with an impressive 8-1 upset of 13th-ranked Mary Washington on Sunday morning. The Blue Jays pick up their first win of the season and improve to 1-4, while the Eagles slip to 5-4. After losing nine straight in the series with Mary Washington, Hopkins has now won the last two meetings between the two.

Hopkins opened up the match by sweeping all three doubles to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and sophomore Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) picked up an 8-4 win at first over Courtney Goimarac and Katie Schafer. The win for Bhamidipati was her 50th career doubles win, making her just the third player in program history to reach the milestone. While at second, freshmen Nandita Krishnan (Chennai, India/Sishya School) and Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, CA/Valencia) dropped just one game in defeating Meg Lawlor and Michelle Meadows, 8-1. And at third, sophomores Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Doylestown) and Mallory Willenborg (Miami Shores, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) won 8-2 over Cassie Bowman and Casey Malcolm at third.

In singles action, Hopkins won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets, to account for the 8-1 final. Krishnan dropped just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Schafer at second. Bhamidipati won 6-3, 6-2 at third over Meadows. At fourth, it was Willenborg with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Malcolm. Freshman Andrea Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) won 7-6, 6-3 over Bowman. Several won at sixth, beating Danielle Velardi, 6-3, 6-3. The Eagles lone point came at first, where Goimarac won in three sets over Warren, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Hopkins returns to action and opens up Centennial Conference play on Friday, March 26 at McDaniel. The match is slated to start at 4:00 pm.
