Johns Hopkins Splits with Chicago, Muhlenberg

BALTIMORE, MD - The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon. Hopkins opened the day with a 7-2 loss to fourth-ranked Chicago and then defeated Muhlenberg, 8-1, in Centennial Conference action in Baltimore. The Blue Jays move to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference and have now won 31 straight conference matches.

Against the Maroons, the Blue Jays picked up wins at second doubles and sixth singles in the loss. In doubles action, senior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) and sophomore Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) dropped an 8-2 decision to Chrissy Hu and Kendra Higgins at first. Freshmen Nandita Krishnan (Chennai, India/Sishya School) and Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, CA/Valencia) won 8-6 over Linden Li and Jennifer Kung at second. And at third, sophomores Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Doylestown) and Mallory Willenborg (Miami Shores, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) lost 8-4 to Carmen Vaca Guzman and Aswini Krishnan.

In singles action, Wu picked up Hopkins second point of the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at sixth over Shanelle Trail. Warren lost at first, 6-4, 6-2 to Higgins. At second, Krishnan lost in three sets to Kung, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Bhamidipati lost a close one, 7-5, 6-3 to Vaca Guzman won a tight one at third. While Willenborg lost in three sets to Li at fourth, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Hu wrapped up the scoring for the Maroons with a 6-2, 6-0 win over junior Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) at fifth.

Against the Mules, the Blue Jays began the match by sweeping all three doubles before winning five of six in singles. Senior Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and junior Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) picked up an 8-6 win at first over Caitie Drucker and Sara Sutker. Freshmen Andrea Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and Ariel Several (Gladwyne, PA/Friends' Central School) won by an identical score at second over Danielle Winston and Lindsay Schmidt. And at third, sophomore Vanessa Charubhumi (East Elmhurst, NY/Stuyvesant) and freshman Yoko Hirase (Plano, TX/Plano West) needed just nine games to defeat Chelsey Waldron and Amanda on Taube, 8-1.

In singles action, Muhlenberg picked up its lone point of the match at first when Druker won a marathon three-set match over Andrea Berlinghof, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. At second, Several won easily 6-1 in the first set, before holding on, 7-6, in the second to take the win over Sutker. Elamir won in two at third, beating Winston, 6-2, 6-3. Ellen Berlinghof also won easily in her first set, 6-1, over Schmidt before winning a close second set 7-5 to take the match. Charubhumi needed just 14 total games to beat Waldron at fifth, 6-1, 6-1. And at sixth, Hirase dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Deniz Uzel.

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 28 as the Blue Jays travel to Fredericksburg, VA to take on sixth-ranked Washington & Lee at 11:00 am.
