BALTIMORE, MD - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team shut out visiting Gettysburg Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. With just one Centennial Conference match remaining, the Blue Jays have clinched home court advantage for next weekend's Centennial Conference Tournament. Hopkins wins their 37th straight conference match and improves to 17-4 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial. The Bullets slip to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference.
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) lost just one game in an 8-1 win at second over Chris Curran and Mike McLaughlin. The win for Blythe was his 59th career doubles win, tying him with Joe Vasoontara '08 for second in program history. Freshmen Morgan Dauer (Lloyd Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) and Jeff Kamei (Downey, CA/Troy) then picked up an 8-4 win at third over Will Brinks and Kevin Raynes. Senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and junior Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) closed out doubles action with an 8-4 win at first over Terry Keegan and Sebastian Rodriguez.
In singles action, the Blue Jays swept all six matches in straight sets to take the match. Sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) quickly pushed Hopkins lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Keegan at second. Barnaby then clinched the match for Hopkins with his win at third as he beat McLaughlin, 6-1, 6-0. Kamei followed that up with a 6-3, 6-0 win at fifth over Raynes, for his sixth straight win. Dauer then won his 10th straight and remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth over Rodriguez. Freshman Adam Mernit (Bayside, NY/Walt Whitman) won at sixth, beating Brinks, 6-2, 6-3 to move to 4-0 on the year. Maldow closed out the match with a hard fought 6-3, 6-4 win over Curran at first. The win for Maldow was his 26th career Centennial Conference win, breaking the school record.
Hopkins wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 24 with a pair of matches. Hopkins will close out Centennial Conference play at Haverford on Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 11:00 am as the Blue Jays look to complete its fourth straight unbeaten conference slate. At 3:30 pm on Saturday, Hopkins will face Delaware in Newark, DE.
