Complete Results of the Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Johns Hopkins women's track and field team had several members compete on the opening day of the prestigious Penn Relays and the Blue Jay contingent did not disappoint. Entered in three events on day one, the Blue Jays turned in three strong performances with two NCAA Provisional qualifying times and a school record among their efforts.
Sophomore Cecilia Furlong turned in perhaps the best showing of the day for Johns Hopkins as she placed 11th in the 3000m steeplechase with a school-record time of 11:04.48. Her time met NCAA Provisional qualifying standards and currently ranks as the 15th-best time turned in by a Division III runner this season. In a race consisting primarily of runners from Division schools, Furlong was third among entrants from a Division III school.
Senior Laura Paulsen, a regular at this event throughout her career at Johns Hopkins, also posted an NCAA Provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 as she clocked in at 17:18.43. Like Furlong's race, the field for the 5,000 was filled with runners primarily from Division I schools.
The Blue Jays rounded out their efforts by competing in the Centennial/Middle Atlantic Conference section of the 4x400 relay. The team of Amelia Vallenilla, Stephanie Chung, Anita Mikkilineni, Leah Sibener placed sixth in the 12-team field with a time of 4:07.53.
