SWARTHMORE, PA -- Senior Laura Paulsen successfully defended her title in the 10,000-meter run to help the Johns Hopkins women's track team to the top spot in the standings after the first day of the 2010 Centennial Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Blue Jays accumulated 25 points through the first two events to edge Dickinson (22 points) for the top spot. Muhlenberg (14) is the only other team with more than eight points.

In what eventually became a four-person race for first, Paulsen turned in a stunning final 400 to edge Dickinson's Catherine Campbell by less than a second. Paulsen clocked in at 37:22.84 to edge Campbell (37:23.67), who is ranked fourth in the nation in the event. Paulsen covered the final 400 meters in 71 seconds to earn her title and grab 10 team points.

The Blue Jays picked up four more team points in the 10,000 as Megan Brower placed sixth (38:19.00) and Mira Patel placed eighth (39:25.28).

The pole vault was the only other completed event on day one and the Blue Jays grabbed third and fourth place. Freshmen Emily Kaska and Chery Yeung actually tied for second with a vault of 10-05.25, but lost out on the runner-up spot on a tie-breaker. Still, their third and fourth-place finishes were good for 11 team points.

Action continues at Swarthmore on Saturday and Sunday with the Blue Jays in pursuit of their first-ever Centennial Conference title.
