WESTMINSTER, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team dropped just three of a possible 91 games en route to a 9-0 win over host McDaniel on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 6-7 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Green Terror, meanwhile, slip to 2-9 overall and 0-6 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays dropped just two games in doubles action as they raced out to a 3-0 lead. Senior Ellen Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and sophomore Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Doylestown) won easily, 8-0, at first over Brittany Starlings and Kristina Shavirov. And at third, freshmen Yoko Hirase (Plano, TX/Plano West) and Louisa Drake (Riverside, CT/Kent School) won by an identical 8-0 score over Becky Putnam and Elizabeth McCaskey. Freshmen Renata Smith (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) and Andrea Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) wrapped up doubles actiono with an 8-2 win at second over Jamie Latham and Sara Yost.
In singles play, Hopkins won in straight sets at first, second, third and sixth before winning at fourth and fifth in pro sets. Boger, Ellen Berlinghof and Drake all won 6-0, 6-0 at second, third and sixth, respectively. Boger defeated Yost, while Ellen Berlinghof beat Shavirov and Drake beat McCaskey. Andrea Berlinghof then lost just one game ina 6-0, 6-1 win at first over Latham. Hirase and Smith won their matches, 8-0, in pro sets at fourth and fifth. Hirase won at fourth over Putnam and Smith beat Jessica Gelber at fifth.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 10 with a pair of matches at home. At 10:00 am, Hopkins will face Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial Conference match. Hopkins will then face Salisbury at 3:00 pm.
