BALTIMORE, MD - The 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team defeated visiting Haverford, 5-0, on Saturday in the Centennial Conference semifinals. The Blue Jays improve to 14-8 on the season and will host the Swarthmore Garnet in the championship match on Sunday. The Fords end their season at 8-8.
Hopkins swept all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. Senior Ellen Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) and freshman Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, CA/Valencia) won 8-0 at third over Katie Drooyan and Sarah Gibson to make it 1-0. Sophomore Courtney Boger (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) and freshman Nandita Krishnan (Chennai, India/Sishya School) then won 8-0 at second over Helen Fisun and Fumiko Shogase. Senior Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and sohomore Carolyn Warren (Boulder, CO/Fairview) closed out doubles play with a close 8-6 win over Jaclyn Porter and Katie Wettick at first.
In singles play, Wu lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth over Drooyan to push Hopkins lead in the match to 4-0. Freshman Andrea Berlinghof (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) also lost just games in her win at sixth singles to clinch the match for the Blue Jays with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sarah Gibson. With the match already decided, the other four singles matches were halted.
Hopkins will host Swarthmore, which defeated Dickinson 5-2 in the other semifinal, on Sunday at 11:00 am in the Centennial Conference Championship. The Blue Jays and the Garnet met in the Centennial title match in 2007 and 2008, with Hopkins winning both matches.
