TRENTON, NJ - The top-seeded and top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated eighth-seeded Moravian in the first round game of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Tournament by a score of 13-4. The Blue Jays scored seven unearned runs in the first three innings to build a lead and they would not look back. The Blue Jays are now 40-4 on the season while the Greyhounds are 26-14.
Hopkins will face Keystone tomorrow at 4:30 pm in the winner's bracket. Keystone defeated Alvernia in its first round game, 13-3. Alvernia and Moravian will face off at 10:00 am in an elimination game.
The Blue Jays scored in each of the first six innings of the game to build a 13-1 lead.
Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) was just a home run away from the cycle as he crossed the plate three times and had two RBIs. Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) had three hits as well with four RBIs.
The Blue Jays took 6-0 lead after two innings, with all six runs being unearned. Dave Kahn had an RBI single in the first inning and two-RBI double in the second inning. Stephen Bejsiuk (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), Matthew Bernardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest), and Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) all had RBI singles in the second inning.
Moravian pushed a run across in the third when Rocco Del Priore scored on a Jon Baltz groundout.
Hopkins added two runs in third as Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) doubled home John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga). Bolyard later scored on a Greyhound error.
Youchak tripled to lead off the fourth inning and would later score on a double by Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy). Hopkins then made the score 11-1 in the fifth inning on a two-RBI double by Kahn.
The Blue Jays added two more in the sixth on a RBI triple by Bolyard, who would then score on a James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem) single.
Moravian plated three runs in the top of the seventh. Matt Pezzato and Jake Schweitzer had RBI singles and Matt Kensecki walked with the bases loaded for an RBI.
Alex Eliopoulos (Arlington, VA/The Heights School) earned the win for Hopkins by allowing just one run on six hits in five innings of work. Eliopoulos struck out four Moravian batters and had no walks. Aaron Schwartz (Cypress, CA/Fairmont Prep) had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth innings.
Chris Morrison took the loss for the Greyhounds by allowing 13 runs, six earned, on 14 hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Morrison had three strikeouts and one walk.
Bernardi, Bolyard, and Teta each had two hits on the day for the Blue Jays.
Schweitzer, Brad Bodine, and Del Priore each had three hits for Moravian.
The Blue Jays had 15 hits and one error while the Greyhounds had 14 hits and four errors. The errors were the story of game as Hopkins only had a one hit advantage over Moravian.
