BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team used a balanced scoring attack to roll past visting Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 3-4 (1-1 CC), while the Garnet drop to 3-5 (1-1 CC).
Swarthmore caught Hopkins off guard early in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game on a goal from freshman Nia Jones off a feed from sophomore Sophia Agathis.
The Blue Jays responded quickly, as junior Carly Bianco drilled a shot past Garnet goalkeeper Katie Ashmore in the 4th minute to even the score at 1-1.
After evening the score, Hopkins continued to pressure Swarthmore and took a 2-1 lead in the 20th minute when senior Jennifer Motylinski collected a Lindsay McKenna pass on the right side and knocked it past the goalkeeper into the left netting.
Hopkins found paydirt again in the 30th minute when McKenna notched her first goal of the season to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 advantage at the half. McKenna settled a rebound off a Blue Jay shot and knocked it past the outstretch arms of Ashmore.
JHU continued to look sharp in the second half, creating several quality scoring opportunities. The Blue Jays finally broke through in the second stanza in the 56th minute when junior Bianco dribbled towards the goal on the left side and fired a shot that was saved by Ashmore. Sophomore Meghan Kellett found herself in the right place at the right time and slid the ball into the empty net to give Hopkins a commanding 4-1 lead.
Senior Ariana Branchini rounded out the Blue Jay scoring in the 64th minute, flipping the ball to the upper right netting on a penalty stroke.
Swarthmore sophomore Katie Teleky tallied her sixth goal of the season just over three minutes later, but it proved to be too little, too late for the Garnet as Hopkins secured the 5-2 victory.
Hopkins held a commanding advantage in shots (28-8) and penalty corners (16-3). Blue Jay goalkeeper Kim Stein recorded three saves in the win, while Ashmore totaled 13 saves in the loss.
The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, September 29 at Centennial Conference foe Dickinson at 4 pm.
