BALTIMORE, MD - It was the seniors that led the way for the Johns Hopkins field hockey team in a 2-1 win over visiting Haverford in Centennial Conference action Saturday. Seniors Carly Bianco and Annie Shepard provided the goals, goalie Kim Stein made 14 saves and classmate Ali Bahneman had a defensive save as the Blue Jays snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Fords drop their second straight to fall to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial.
Bianco put the Blue Jays on the board at 20:15 with her third of the season when she dribbled inside the circle and blasted a shot past Fords' goalie Sydney Hyder from about 10 yards out. Her goal appeared to be the lone one of the game until the 63-minute mark. A great effort from Alexa Lantiere on the end line led to Shepard's goal at 63:20. Hyder came out to challenge Lantiere on the left end line but the freshman was able to avoid the goalie and center the ball. Shepard, who was in the right place at the right time, was wide open in front of the cage. She collected Lantiere's pass and calmly buried it for her fifth of the season.
Haverford ended Stein's bid at a shutout with just 48 ticks on the clock. Bryn Bissey fired a shot on cage from about five yards out, but Stein was there to make the save. However, the ball rebounded right back to Bissey, who fired a low shot into the left corner for the goal.
It was a tale of two halves statistically as JHU outshot Haverford, 13-3, in the first half and had eight corners to just three for the Fords. In the second, it was Haverford that outshot Hopkins, 18-7, and had more corners (6-1). Stein finished with 14 saves, her fourth straight game with double-digit saves. Hyder posted 11 saves in the loss for Haverford.
Hopkins stays alive in the Centennial Conference playoff hunt with the win and returns to action on Wednesday, October 19 against Dickinson. Game time is set for 4:00 pm at Homewood Field.
