SWARTHMORE, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over host and 21st-ranked Swarthmore in a key Centennial Conference match-up Saturday night. The Blue Jays stay atop the conference standings with the win as they improve to 8-4-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the Centennial. The Garnet, who suffer their first home conference loss since October 24, 2007, slip to 10-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the conference.
Junior defender Taylor Woodrum put the Blue Jays on the board early, scoring his first career goal in just the sixth minute. Senior Sean Coleman lofted a corner kick into the Garnet box and Woodrum headed it home to put the visitors on top, 1-0.
Almost exactly 40 minutes later and just 49 seconds into the second half, Coleman blasted a shot from the top of the box past David D'Annunzio to give Hopkins a two-goal lead. Freshman Nick Cerrone would make a pair of second half saves to preserve the shutout.
Swarthmore had the edge in shots, 11-9, while Hopkins had the edge in corners, 5-4. Cerrone and D'Annunzio each finished with a pair of saves. For the Blue Jays it is their first win over the Garnet at Clothier Field since September 15, 2007.
Hopkins enters the final week of the regular season with a one-point lead in the Centennial Conference standings over Dickinson and Muhlenberg. The Red Devils and the Mules will meet on Wednesday at Dickinson. Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, October 25 as the Blue Jays host the McDaniel Green Terror. Game time at Homewood Field is slated for 7:00 pm.
