BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and went on to beat visiting Gettysburg, 5-2, on a wet, wintry day at Homewood Field Saturday night. The Blue Jays wrap up the regular season with a 10-7 overall record and clinch the three seed in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament with a 7-3 in the conference. The Bullets slip to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the conference and they must wait for the final games of the conference to be completed to learn their postseason fate.
The Blue Jays jumped on the bullets early, scoring a pair of goals in just 51 seconds to go up 2-0. Senior Annie Shepard struck first as Hopkins capitalized on a corner. Senior Carly Bianco blasted a hard shot from the top of the circle, that junior Liane Tellier redirected across the mouth of the cage to Shepard, who one-timed it past Megan Feeg at 8:27. Shortly after that, Bianco weaved through traffic in the Bullets' circle before scoring off a back-handed shot.
Junior Maggie Phillips, the Blue Jays' leading scorer, pushed Hopkins lead to three with the first of her two on the day. Senior Ali Bahneman had a long hit from outside the circle that Feeg kicked aside. But Phillips collected the loose ball and buried it in the left side of the cage for her 13th of the season at 18:33. Tellier capped the first-half scoring with 6:39 to play. Tellier took a corner for the Blue Jays, sending the ball up to Bianco, who passed it right back to Tellier. She took the pass and blasted a shot into the cage to go up 4-0.
Gettysburg came out firing to start the second half, scoring a pair of quick goals to make it a two-goal game. Liz Baron got the Bullets on the board at 40:30 off a Gettysburg corner. Hayward Sawers took the corner and sent the ball up to Baron who fired home her sixth of the season. Just two minutes and 29 seconds later, Kelly Spieker found the cage to make it 4-2 with 26:01 to play. Baron fired a shot that junior Elizabeth Peijnenburg saved, but the rebound ended up on the stick of Spieker, who one-timed it inside the right post.
Hopkins answered just over six minutes later, scoring off yet another corner, to close out the scoring. Tellier once again took the corner, sending the ball to Bahneman, who fired a shot on cage. Phillips, alone on the right post, tipped it in for her team-leading 14th of the season.
Senior Kim Stein started the game in the cage for the Blue Jays and made five first half saves. Peijnenburg came in to start the second and made two saves before being replaced by Stein. Stein made an additional three saves in the final 25 minutes of the second and earned the win. In addition, Bahneman had a pair of defensive saves and senior Zoe Koven also made a defensive save. Feeg made eight saves for the Bullets in the loss. Hopkins had a 21-18 edge in shots while corners were even at 12-12.
Hopkins earns a first-round bye in the Centennial Conference Tournament and will face second-seeded Ursinus. Franklin & Marshall has earned the top seed and will host the final four in Lancaster, PA.
