BALTIMORE, MD - Third-ranked Franklin & Marshall scored a pair of goals in just over eight minutes to defeat host Johns Hopkins, 2-1, in Centennial Conference field hockey action Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays drop their second straight and fall to 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference. The Diplomats remain unbeaten on the season as they improve to 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
Senior Annie Shepard put the Blue Jays on the board at 10:34 on a heads-up play. Junior Sam Stuek fired a hard hit from just outside the circle and Shepard, standing just in front of Dips' goalie Avery Koep, tipped the ball up and over Koep and into the goal.
Franklin & Marshall, which has outscored its opponents 43-5 this season, answered at 20:31 to tie the game. Chelsey Talhelm took a corner for the Dips and sent a short pass to Kimmy Fisher, who collected the pass and sent the ball right back to Talhelm. She pulled in the pass and just snuck a shot between the outstretched pad of senior goalie Kim Stein and the right post. Becky Willert then put the Dips on top at 28:45 in what proved to be the final goal of the game. Maura Hennigan dribbled in and rifled a shot from about 17 yards out. Allison McLaren redirected the ball to Willert, who one-timed it home for her conference-leading 18th goal of the season.
Stein finished with 13 saves for the Blue Jays while senior Veronica Radice had a defensive save. Kope made four stops to earn the win. Franklin & Marshall outshot Hopkins, 25-6, and had 19 corners to four for the Jays. The Dips win snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series and is their first win in Baltimore since 1977.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 8 as the Blue Jays travel to 10th-ranked Ursinus. The Centennial Conference tilt is slated to begin at noon.
