ORANGE, CA - Junior Carolyn Warren earned a straight sets win at first singles to cap comeback as 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to beat 15th-ranked Chapman, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their third straight and improve to 4-3 while the Panthers slip to 5-8.
Chapman took a 2-1 lead after doubles with close wins at second and third. Freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan picked up Hopkins' point with an 8-4 win at first over Kelley Fox and Liz Lewis, the second-ranked doubles pair in the ITA West region. At second, Genna Ford and Melissa Boyer won a close 8-6 match over sophomore Yoko Hirase and Warren. Danielle Kaiden and Kelley Klebenow did the same at third, beating junior Courtney Boger and freshman Abby Clark, 8-6.
Hopkins came back to win four of six singles matches to win the match 5-4. Warren's win at first was the deciding one, as she beat Lewis, ranked third in the West, by a 6-3, 6-2 score. At second, Krishnan lost just two games in a straight sets win over Fox, 6-0, 6-2. Hogan picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Boyer at third and sophomore Ariel Several won 6-2, 6-4 at fourth over Klebenow. Kaiden won at fifth for the Panthers, beating Clark 6-2, 6-1. And Ford earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over sophomore Andrea Berlinghof at sixth.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, taking on sixth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer at 4:00 pm PST in Claremont, CA.
