NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware women's tennis team earned a 6-1 win over visiting Johns Hopkins on Sunday as the Blue Hens snap the Blue Jays' 10 match win streak. Johns Hopkins falls to 13-2 on the season as the Blue Jays suffer their second loss this season to a Division I opponent. Delaware, meanwhile, improves to 12-4.
Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the match after sweeping all three doubles matches. Megan Doran and Samantha Carnall beat freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan, 8-5, at first. Dorothy Safron and Montse Ripoll were 8-3 winners at second over senior Abby Dwyer and junior Carolyn Warren. And at third, Ivana Petrich and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom beat junior Courtney Boger and freshman Brooke Pottish, 8-4.
In singles play, the Blue Hens won five of six matches to wrap up the win. Krishnan picked up the Blue Jays lone point of the match with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at second over Safron. At first, Doran beat Warren 6-3, 7-5. Carnall won at third, beating Hogan 6-4, 6-2. At fourth, Petrich won 6-2, 6-3 over sophomore Ariel Several to break the Delaware record for career singles wins with her 75th. Ripoll won 6-1, 6-3 at fifth over Dwyer and Sjoberg-Sundstrom won at sixth with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Boger.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, April 21 as Gettysburg visits Baltimore. The Centennial Conference match is slated to begin at 4:00 pm. That wraps up Hopkins regular season as the Centennial Conference Tournament will begin on Saturday, April 30.
