Blue Jays Knock Off Shorewomen, 8-1

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team knocked host Washington College from the ranks of the unbeaten on Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 win. The Blue Jays win their seventh straight and improve to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Shorewomen fall to 11-1 and 6-1 in the conference. The Blue Jays take over sole possession of first place in the Centennial with the win.

Hopkins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles by sweeping all three matches. Freshman Hailey Hogan and sophomore Nandita Krishnan picked up an 8-2 win at first, beating Jordan Finnegan and Brittany Marshall. Junior Courtney Boger and freshman Abby Clark beat Kat Cohen and Bethany Daller, 8-3, at third. At second, senior Abby Dwyer and junior Carolyn Warren won a close 8-6 match over Campbell McNicol and Amanda Bercovici.

Hopkins followed that by winning five of six singles matches to take home the win. Warren beat Bercovici, 6-3, 6-1 at first. Krishnan and Hogan turned in identical, 6-1, 6-4 wins at second and third, respectively, over Finnegan and Marshall. The final three matches were decided in pro sets. Sophomore Ariel Several dropped just one game in an 8-1 win at fourth over McNicol. Clark won 8-2 over Cohen at fifth. The Shorewomen picked up their lone point when Daller beat sophomore Yoko Hirase, 8-6, at sixth.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 13 with a pair of split squad matches at McDaniel and Salisbury. Both matches are slated to start at 4:00 pm.
