BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored three goals in 13 minutes midway through the first half en route to a 4-0 win over Muhlenberg at a rain-soaked Homewood Field Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their second straight and improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Mules fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Junior Meghan Kellett put the Blue Jays on the board at 16:43 when she was in the right place at the right time. Sophomore Sarah Henderson hit a long pass from about 30 yards out and Kellett, just a few yards from goal, deflected the ball inside the left post for her first goal of the season. Just over six minutes later, senior Kelly Schwarz scored her first of the season and Hopkins' lead was two. Junior Liane Tellier struck a corner for the Blue Jays, sending a short pass to senior Ali Bahneman, who fired a hard shot on the Mules' cage. From in close, Schwarz redirected Bahneman's shot just past Kristen Dornenburg.
Junior Maggie Phillips capped the first half scoring with her team-leading seventh of the season with just over five minutes to play. In traffic in front of the Muhlenberg goal, she redirected a shot from just inside the circle by Tellier. Phillips added her second straight goal at 60:32 when she corralled a long pass, hit around a defender and then rifled a shot in the cage from about 10 yards out.
Senior Kim Stein made the start in goal for Hopkins and did not make a save in more than 56 minutes of action. She was replaced by junior Elizabeth Peijnenburg, who also did not make a save. Dornenburg made 14 saves in more than 63 minutes of action before being replaced by Sierra Lenker. Hopkins outshot Muhlenberg, 25-2, and had seven corners to the Mules three.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 25 as the Blue Jays travel to Newport News, VA to take on 17th-ranked Christopher Newport. The non-conference contest is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
