LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior quarterback Hewitt Tomlin (Jackson, TN/Trinity Christian) has been named the Centennial Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Blue Jays' 45-14 season-opening win at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. Tomlin shares the award with Susquehanna quarterback Rich Palazzi, who helped the Crusaders to a 33-30 overtime victory against Wilkes to open the season.
Tomlin was 28-of-37 for 297 yards with a school-record-tying six touchdowns in the win over the Mariners. After throwing for three touchdowns in the first half to stake the Blue Jays to a 21-14 halftime lead, Tomlin enjoyed one of the finest quarters in school or league history as he was 17-of-17 for 189 yards with three touchdowns in the third quarter alone. He eventually extended his streak of consecutive completions to 19 before misfiring on his final attempt of the game - he didn't play the final 12 minutes of the game.
Tomlin's 19 consecutive completions were just two shy of the NCAA Division III single-game record for consecutive completions, while the six touchdown passes tied the Johns Hopkins record originally set by John Guglielmo against Georgetown on October 26, 1991. Tomlin now holds or shares more than 25 school records.
In addition to his exploits on the single-game record book, Tomlin also continued his assault on the JHU career record book. He had entered the game tied with current Blue Jay coach Jim Margraff for first place on Hopkins' career touchdown passes list, but now holds the record himself with 56. In addition, he became the first quarterback in school history to top 8,000 career passing yards as he now has 8,095. He ranks second among all active NCAA Division III quarterbacks in career passing yards.
Tomlin, who already ranks as the winningest quarterback in Johns Hopkins history (26-8), also moved into sole possession of second place on the Centennial Conference's career victories list by a quarterback. Only Ron Semarini, who won 35 games as McDaniel's starting QB from 1996-99, has won more games than Tomlin as a starting quarterback since the Centennial was formed in 1983.
Johns Hopkins, which ran its overall winning streak to six games dating back to last season with the win at Merchant Marine, will host Palazzi and Susquehanna on Saturday, September 10 at Homewood Field. Kickoff is set for 2 pm.
