Sumpio's Golden Goal
BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Brandon Sumpio, playing in his final game at Homewood Field, kept his team's season alive when he scored in the 96th minute to lift Johns Hopkins to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference First Round Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 8-7-2 and advance to the semifinals for the seventh straight season. The Diplomats fall to 12-6-0 in what is likely their final game.
Junior Gus Ingaglio nearly put the Blue Jays on the board in just the 11th minute when he ripped a shot from about 15 yards out that hit the right post and just skimmed across the mouth of the goal and out of bounds. But it was the Diplomats that would score first, cashing in on a long throw into the box. Ryan O'Connell threw the ball in from the right sideline and it was headed down by Chase TenBrook. After a scramble in the six-yard box, Mike Irving touched the ball out to Jared Bomba, who one-timed it past sophomore Nick Cerronein the 19th minute.
Hopkins just missed a chance to tie the game in the 25th minute. Off a free kick just outside the left corner of the box, freshman Ian Heinrich blasted a hard shot through the wall that TJ White was able to get a hand on. The ball came right to freshman Josh Hong, who hit it just wide of the goal. Franklin & Marshall was inches from a two-goal lead in the 38th minute when O'Connell had another long throw into the box. Shawn Ganow, with his back to the goal, flicked the ball with his head and it appeared it would just slip under the cross bar, but Cerrone tipped it over at the last minute.
It was junior Danny Reateguithat would finally pull the Blue Jays even in the 84th minute, as the third time was the charm. Heinrich played a nice ball into the box from the left end line and Ingaglio tried to one touch it in, but White got a hand on it. Sumpio tried on the rebound, but White was there again. On the third try, Reategui banged in the rebound off a Diplomats' defender to knot the score at one apiece.
Sumpio then sparked the celebration in the 96th minute with a highlight reel goal. Reategui sent a ball into the box but it was headed away by an F&M defender right to Sumpio on the right side of the box. He headed it once and then volleyed a shot inside the left post to end the game.
Cerrone finished with six saves to earn the win for the Blue Jays, while White also had six stops for the Diplomats. Hopkins had a 16-15 edge in shots, while Franklin & Marshall had a 5-2 advantage in corners. Hopkins improves to 3-0-0 against Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Blue Jays will now face the top-seeded Swarthmore Garnet on Saturday, November 3 in the semifinals. It is the fourth time in the last five years that Hopkins and Swarthmore will meet in the tournament. Game time is set for 6:00 pm at Clothier Field.
