McCullagh, Vassila Power Johns Hopkins Past Mary Baldwin

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior forward Alex Vassila and sophomore center Ciara McCullagh combined for 30 points and 30 rebounds to lead JHU past Mary Baldwin, 76-32, in the opening game of the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays even their record at 1-1 on the season, while the Fighting Squirrels open their season with a loss.

With the game tied at six apiece with just over seven minutes gone, senior KaraLea Follmer drained a jumper in the paint to ignite a 15-2 Hopkins' run that saw the Blue Jays take a 21-8 lead. McCullagh fueled the run with eight of the team's 15 points. Shanice Miles then hit a pair of three-pointers around a Maggie Fruehan jumper to trim the deficit to nine with 6:09 to play in the half.

Hopkins responded with an 11-2 burst that gave the Blue Jays a 34-16 lead at the half. This time it was Vassila doing the bulk of the work during the final six minutes, accounting for six points, three rebounds and a block. Eight different players scored in the first half for the Blue Jays, led by McCullagh's eight points.

Coming out of the half, Mary Baldwin got a layup from Jazmine Brooks and a pair of free throws from Shamanda Washington to make it a 34-20 game less than two minutes in. Senior Sarah Higbee got Hopkins on the board first in the second, with a bucket in the paint, followed six quick points from Vassila and junior Alyssa Fleming and Hopkins led by 22. Brooks put a brief halt to the Hopkins' spurt with a jumper at 15:55. But the Blue Jays came right back with a 16-4 run to really put the game out of reach at 58-26 with 9:17 to play in the game. Hopkins would go on to take the 76-32 win.

Vassila punched up 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and grabbed 14 rebounds for the double-double. McCullagh posted her first career double-double with career highs of 15 points (7-of-11 FG) and 16 rebounds. Also finishing in double figures was Higbee, with 12 points and she also blocked three shots. In all 11 different players scored for Hopkins. Miles led the Fighting Squirrels with 12 points, with all four of her field goals coming from three-point, while Brooks finished with 10 points.

Hopkins shot 41.5 percent from the field, while holding Mary Baldwin to just 18.2 percent from the field. The Blue Jays controlled a tournament and school-record 77 rebounds on the day, outrebounding the Squirrels 77-23.

Hopkins advances to the championship game and will face the winner of the Baruch-Medaille game. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 pm at Goldfarb Gym. Mary Baldwin will square off with the Baruch-Medaille loser in the consolation game at 1:00 pm.
