Top-Ranked Williams Bests Johns Hopkins, 6-3

LEXINGTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team faced its sixth top-10 opponent on Saturday, falling to the top-ranked and undefeated Williams Ephs, 6-3. The Blue Jays slip to 5-4 on the season, while the Ephs remain unbeaten at 9-0. Hopkins is now 2-4 against top-10 teams this season.

Williams took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at second and third. Hopkins picked up its doubles point at first where sophomore Hailey Hogan and junior Nandita Krishnan beat Kara Shoemaker and Taylor French, 9-7. Sophomore Abby Clark and freshman Shannon Herndon lost at second, 8-5, to Kathleen Elkins and Kristin Alotta. And at third, senior Courtney Boger and freshman Elaine Baik lost 8-3 to Caroline Capute and Rebecca Curran.

In singles, Hopkins earned wins at second and third to pick up two more points in the team score. Hogan earned a three-set win at second over Shoemaker, winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 for her 10th win of the season. Krishnan won in straight sets, beating Nancy Worley, 6-4, 6-4 at third. Curran won a three-setter over Herndon, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at fourth. Elkins won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth over Clark while Capute was a three-set winner with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 decision over freshman Stephanie Rettig. Alotta won her first set, 6-3, at first and was up 4-3 in the second when Baik was forced to retire.

Hopkins returns to the court and Centennial Conference play on Tuesday, March 27 at Franklin & Marshall. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
