BALTIMORE, MD - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team claimed its sixth straight Centennial Conference title on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 win over third-seeded Swarthmore. The Blue Jays improve to 16-5 overall and earn the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Garnet end their season at 10-6.
Sophomore Abby Clark and freshman Shannon Herndon gave Hopkins an early 1-0 lead with an 8-1 win over Kelsey Johnson and Katie Samuelson at second singles. Sophomore Hailey Hogan and junior Nandita Krishnan then beat Lia Carlson and Emily Rosenblum, 8-2, at first. Freshmen Elaine Baik and Stephanie Rettig followed with an 8-3 defeat of Stephanie Chia and Epiphany Enlish at third to wrap up doubles and give Hopkins a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Krishnan pushed Hopkins one win closer to the title as she defeated Rosenblum, 6-2, 6-0 at second singles. It was her 50th career singles win, making her the fifth player in program history to reach the milestone. For the second straight day, it was Clark with the clinching win as she beat Chia, 6-2, 6-1 at fourth to give Hopkins the title.
Hopkins will now advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year. The first, second and third rounds are scheduled for May 11-13. The Blue Jays will learn their tournament fate on Monday, May 7. Stay tuned to HopkinsSports.com for more information.
