BALTIMORE, MD -- Johns Hopkins football coach Jim Margraff announced today that Mickey Rehring and Chris Castillo have joined the Blue Jay coaching staff for the 2012 season. Rehring will coach the team's linebackers while also serving as the special teams coordinator, while Castillo will coach the defensive tackles.

Rehring comes to Johns Hopkins after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Bowdoin (ME), where he coached the Polar Bear defensive line and also served as the special teams coach. Rehring's defensive line fueled a Bowdoin defense that ranked among the nation's best last season. The Polar Bears finished in the top 50 nationally in five different statistical categories in 2011, including 16th in total defense, 19th in passing yards allowed per game and 21st in scoring defense.

Rehring brings an extensive familiarity with the Centennial Conference to Johns Hopkins as he played four years of college football at Franklin & Marshall. He was a four-year starter for the Diplomats on the defensive line and earned Second Team All-Centennial honors as a sophomore. Rehring helped guide the Diplomats to a share of the 2004 Centennial Conference title and the 2004 ECAC Southwest Championship as well. F&M also advanced to the ECAC Southeast Bowl in 2005 and Rehring concluded his career with 133 tackles, 15.5 tackles for losses and 8.5 sacks.

Castillo brings an extensive coaching background at the collegiate and high school levels to Homewood. He most recently served as the defensive and special teams coordinator at nearby Dulaney High School, a position that was immediately preceded by a stint as the defensive line/linebackers coach at Greenville (TX) High School. Castillo has also previously served as a graduate assistant at both Hardin-Simmons University and Southern Illinois University.

At Hardin-Simmons, Castillo worked primarily with the defensive line, while also assisting with the strength and conditioning program. He also played an active role in all recruiting efforts at HSU. At SIU, he served as the video coordinator for the Salukis and gained valuable experience in all areas, including game breakdown, scouting and recruiting.

Johns Hopkins will carry a 14-game regular season winning streak into the 2012 season and will open the season at home for the first time since 2008 when Randolph-Macon visits Homewood Field on Saturday, September 1.
