LEWISBURG, PA -- Freshman Schaffer Ochstein broke the program freshman record in the 5,000 meter run and junior Andrew Carey had a strong showing in the 800 meter run to lead the Johns Hopkins men's track & field team at the Bucknell Winter Classic Saturday.
Ochstein ran to a first place finish in the 5,000m, turning in an impressive time of 14:56.70. Just the third athlete in program history to break 15 minutes in the event indoors (Robinson, Tobochnik), Ochstein qualified for the United States Junior Nationals with the result.
Carey placed third overall in the 800m for the Blue Jays, running a season-best time of 1:55.87. The time ranks 22nd in the nation among Division III athletes and first in the Centennial Conference. Trevor Holmgren was just behind in 1:57.77.
Hopkins junior Alex Jebb continued his recent string of success in jumping events, earning second in the long jump and third in the third jump. Jebb posted a season-best 22'3.75" in the long jump and then 45'1.75" in the triple jump.
Julian Saliani cruised to a personal record time of 4:21.27 in the mile run, a time which ranks third on the Hopkins all-time performance list. Additionally, senior James Frick turned in a personal-best 8:45.51 in the 3,000 meter run.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday at the Keogh Invitational in Haverford, PA, before competing in the Centennial Conference championships the following weekend.
