SAN ANTONIO, TX - Playing in its first match since being voted the number one team in the nation, the Johns Hopkins women's tennis team did not disappoint. Hopkins defeated host and 14th-ranked Trinity (TX), 9-0, Wednesday night in the first match of the Blue Jays' spring break trip. The Jays improve to 4-0 while the Tigers fall to 3-13 on the season.
The Blue Jays got off to a strong start, dropping just six games in doubles to take the early 3-0 lead. Junior Hailey Hogan and sophomore Elaine Baik were 8-1 winners over Thavindra Ekanayake and Stephanie Williamson at first. Junior Abby Clark and sophomore Stephanie Rettig beat Kristy Hamilton and Gabrielle Roe, 8-2, at third. And at second, sophomore Shannon Herndon and freshman Sydney Lehman won 8-3 over Kathleen Lundquist and Caroline White.
In singles, Lehman rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over White at third singles. Hogan wasn't too far behind as she lost just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ekanayake at first. Herndon won at second, beating Kylie Hornbeck 6-2, 7-6. Rettig beat Hamilton, 6-3, 6-1 at fifth. Clark won at fourth, beating Roe 6-4, 7-5. And sophomore Shannon Libaw won 7-6, 6-1 over Wiliamson at sixth.
Hopkins is back in action this weekend at the Fab 7 Tournament hosted by Emory University. Hopkins will face second-ranked Amherst and fourth-ranked Emory on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
